GNU/Linux, free software, and the recycling of older PC’s form part of the core of the group, but any and all technology, from communications to computer interfacing for drone aircraft are welcome! Please feel free to create subsections for your own tech and bring newbies up to speed.

Patriot Tech 1 week, 3 days agoThanks FarmerP. This house is really small, so it’s hard to do any kind of tinkering. I’ll scrounge up some oldschool tech to mess with as soon as I can, but it’s a tight fit over here as it is. However, a […]

Patriot Tech 1 week, 3 days agoAmen FarmerP. A 1Ghz Pentium III with at least a gig of ram is all ya need. The old Athlon XP’s are badass chips and I’ve long been a fan of AMD. Get a pre-DCA-deadline motherboard and yo golden. Ya can use SATA cards and USB 2.0 cards to get faster speeds, and hack to gether anything else you need. Yeah… me likes oldschool.

If folks only knew about the wealth of apps and different Linux distributions, and the fact that you can do literally any task with free software with no Microsoft dependency, they would be fans for life. -

Patriot Tech 1 month agoHere are some of the uses of a computer for a Patriot that I can think of:
The storage of a Google Earth and Topo USA map database for a given area.
Encrypted radio data communicatons.
Ballistic calculator.
Medical analysis program.
Enginering and fabrication instructions for many types of devices and items.
Vehicle and aircraft ID…[Read more]-
My problem is how to do all of the above with a computer. Also, is there a way to keep a laptop powered with a potable solar panel?

Check out GNU Radio, a suite of radio communications applications for GNU/Linux. The source code and development kits are freely available, and you could extend GNU Radio in any way you like. Also, Google Earth plugins and support apps will let you download such maps to your computer without any trouble, and are already in a type of database…[Read more]

Patriot Tech 1 month agoFuck yea, would not miss this group for anything. What are the military uses for a computer and how does a digital neanderthal make it happen. Down load of Google earth maps is our first need.
-
Google-Earth-enabled GPS could do a lot of stuff bro. How about a UAV running the Arduino microcontroller, a GPS module, and a radio link with a host machine that could either preprogram a mission or allow a remote pilot to control it directly, much like military drones?
-
So how does a neanderthal make that heppen? Google earth is terrific. How do I download a heap of maps and file them so I can call up whatever I need in the field from a solar powered laptop? This is fun.
-
been a long time since I tinkered with Google Earth…. will have to look into it again when I’ve got stable power and my own machine to work with. As of now, I’m still in Dothan, and the power in this house has a tendency to fry computers. On my mom’s lappy… let HER machine fry!

Welcome to Patriot Tech, SD!!! Glad you’re aboard! That’s a very good point. Not all of us have all that older tech in our closets, so to have someone that DOES is a definite asset. Indeed, it would be a good idea for all members to this group to run an inventory of what parts and software they have and have it available to help each other…[Read more]

Ahh welcome, welcome, Ripely! Damned good to see ya again. Managed to get my hands on a Cobra 29LTD Chrome, peaked n’ tuned. obviously not ssb, but it’s good as an entry unit. I’ll get a channel kit installed and snag an antenna for it, and as soon as I feel comfortable with its operation, I’ll be putting it in my jeep—that is until I…[Read more]
Do you have an internal SATA HDD?
SATA’s the only way to go as long as yo motherboard has the connectors on it. Main system is running a 74gig WD Raptor as the boot drive, and a 1TB WD Caviar Black for file storage. thought about gettin’ an extra SATA card and running an extra Raptor in striped raid… see just how fast mechanical drives can get, but no need really. This…[Read more]
